Types of Astigmatism Surgery and Costs in Colorado Having Your Astigmatism Surgery Performed in Colorado

When you have astigmatism, your vision is blurry due to the way your eye is shaped and how the light is refracted in it. People with astigmatism usually wear glasses or contact lenses in order to correct their vision. However, more and more people are getting astigmatism surgery to correct their vision so they do not need glasses or contacts. There are several different types of astigmatism surgery: LASIK, PRK, LASEK, AK, and LTK. Each of the surgeries handles the astigmatism correction in a different way.

LASIK stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis. LASIK is very popular and is quite possibly the most popular eye surgery to get to correct astigmatism. During LASIK, the cornea is reshaped using the laser. It does this by scraping it with the laser. Then, there will be a flap created in the outer tissue of the cornea to help the eye surgeon get to the inner layers. When the surgery is finished, the flap is folded back and it heals on its own. PRK stands for photorefractive keratectomy. During PRK surgery, the eye surgeon utilizes UV-light in order to reshape the cornea to correct the vision problem. The positive side of PRK surgery is that nothing has to be cut at all.

LASEK stands for laser epithelial keratomileusis. LASEK surgery actually is a combination of some of the attributes of LASIK and some of the attributes of PRK surgery. During LASEK surgery, the cornea is not scraped or cut. Instead a flap is created by the laser and some of the corneal tissue is vaporized by alcohol solution. AK stands for astigmatic keratotomy. During AK surgery, there is no laser used at all. It is a traditional eye surgery method where the surgeon makes an incision or two in the cornea. This procedure causes the cornea to become relaxed, which helps correct vision. LTK stands for laser thermokeratoplasty. In LTK surgery, the cornea is shrunk and reshaped by a laser beam in a matter of seconds. LTK is not for long-term however.

Depending on which type of astigmatism surgery you get in Colorado, the price can be quite expensive. As these surgeries are not for medical reasons, your insurance will not cover having them done. Therefore you will have to pay for it all by yourself. The cost for astigmatism surgery in Denver ranges anywhere from $1,300 to well over $3,000 per eye.
