Types of Astigmatism Surgery and Costs in Maryland The Most Common Eye Surgery

The human eye is a marvelous thing. It looks so simple, yet it is a complex machine. The eye takes in millions of images a day and processes them and uses light refraction for us to see. This is how vision works. When you do not have good vision, then there is a part of that machine that is not working correctly. One of the most common reasons for bad vision is having astigmatism. Usually, people with astigmatism just wear glasses or contacts in order to correct their vision. However, as each year passes, their astigmatism gets worse and they need a new prescription every year. One way around that is to have astigmatism surgery.

One of the hardest parts of getting astigmatism surgery in Maryland is figuring out which procedure you are going to get. There are several different surgical procedures that are used for astigmatism surgery: LASIK, PRK, LTK, LASEK, and AK. LASIK is the most commonly known procedure. Just about any eye surgeon advertises specials on getting LASIK surgery. LASIK is when the astigmatism that is causing your poor eyesight is fixed by a laser reshaping the tissue of the cornea by scraping it and having the surgeon create a corneal flap. When this happens, the way your eyes process light is changed and that improves your vision. PRK surgery is when the eye surgeon uses a UV laser to reshape the outside and the inner layers of the cornea to improve vision.

LTK surgery is a non-contact laser surgery. It is a very quick procedure. The laser is used to shrink and then reshape the corneal tissue in a matter of seconds versus the length of time it takes with the other procedures. This method is not permanent though. LASEK surgery combines both LASIK and PRK procedures. In LASEK, the cornea does not get scraped, but the surgeon does create a flap by vaporizing some of the corneal tissue with an alcohol solution. AK surgery is traditional, non-laser eye surgery. The surgeon makes incisions in the cornea that makes it relax and reshape itself.

As you can imagine, the cost of getting astigmatism surgery in Maryland is dependent on the procedure you have done. The more traditional and laser surgeries that have been around for a while will cost less while the newer procedures will be more expensive. You should expect to spend anywhere from $1,000 to $3,000 per eye.
