Types of Astigmatism Surgery and Costs in Massachusetts

There are several types of astigmatism surgery and costs in Massachusetts. This type of surgery is also referred to as laser eye surgery or refractive surgery. All of the procedures associated with this type of surgery are done to reshape the eye's cornea. The cornea is the front portion of the eye. When there is a curvature that's abnormal, a surgeon will recommend surgery to correct the astigmatism. When there is a curvature in the cornea or the lens of the eye, blurred vision can occur. When the lens or cornea is not shaped properly, surgery must be done so that light can travel to the retina. The surgeon may recommend different types of surgery depending on the severity of the astigmatism. The most common type of surgery to correct astigmatism is Lasik.

When a surgeon performs LASIK surgery on a patient, the tissue of the cornea is reshaped so that light penetrates the eye as it should. This is done by using a laser light beam which scrapes off some of the existing tissue then creating a flap in the cornea. This way the tissue that is underneath can be worked on to reverse the astigmatism. This type of surgical procedure works well on both people who are nearsighted, farsighted, or who also have astigmatism. The procedure is usually completed fairly easily with little risk involved.

PRK, which is also known as photoreactive keratectomy, LASEK, also referred to as laser epithelial keratomileusis, LTK, also known by the name of laser thermokeratoplasty, and AK, also known as astigmatic keratotomy, are other types of astigmatism surgery which may be recommended by an eye surgeon. This depends on what the condition is that afflicts your eyes and the severity of the condition. Another factor to take into consideration is the type of health insurance plan that you carry. Some patients find low cost surgeries advertised, but you should make sure you know exactly what you are getting if you are interested in finding a surgeon that will provide a low price.

Some people don't take into consideration additional costs associated with eye surgery. Some of the extra costs may be for anesthesia, the cost of the facility, the fee for the surgeon, how much the first eye examination and evaluation will cost, follow-up appointments after the surgery, and any additional treatments or services to improve on the surgery. If you see an ad for $299 per eye, usually that will be for the surgery, but additional costs aren't taken into consideration and you may end up paying more than you anticipated. An average cost for this type of surgery is generally between $1,300 and $2,570 for each eye. Make sure you know what you are getting for the money you intend to spend for the surgery.
