Types of Astigmatism Surgery and Costs in New Jersey

Besides being nearsighted or farsighted, some people suffer with what is known as astigmatism. It is caused by an irregular curvature of the eye's cornea. Those that suffer with this condition have issues focusing on a single point and keeping it still and focused. To clarify vision, an optometrist can prescribe corrective lenses with special details that correct the astigmatism. However, wearing glasses and contact lenses can get old. Patients want a more permanent solution. Doctors have developed different types of astigmatism surgery available in New Jersey. The costs of this type of surgery can vary greatly. Patients can find doctors willing to conduct five different types of astigmatism surgery: PRK, LASIK, LASEK, CK, and AK.

The three most common forms of astigmatism surgery are PRK, LASIK, and LASEK. PRK, or photo-refractive keratectomy, is the oldest technique. The surgeon creates a flap over the cornea and uses a laser for reshaping the cornea. This procedure requires sutures. LASIK and LASEK are improvements over this technique. LASIK, or laser assisted in-situ keratomileusis, also involves creating a flap, but at higher level than the PRK procedure. The surgeon then uses a laser to reshape the eye. LASEK, the one with the “E” instead of the “I”, stands for laser assisted sub-epithelium keratomileusis. Using modern techniques, the surgeon takes off the upper layer of protection from the eye. Again, using the laser, the surgeon reshapes the eye. This technique does not involve sutures, but does require a patient to wear a contact lens bandage.

Two other options for astigmatism surgery are CK and AK. The acronym CK stands for conductive keratoplasty. The surgeon uses radio frequency as a tool to shrink collagen around the cornea. For people who have troubles with surgery for any reason, this non-invasive technique may be the answer. Testing is still underway, but the technique is very promising. Doctors may also recommend AK, or astigmatic keratotomy. This technique involves the surgeon making precise incisions across the cornea surface to reshape the way it lies. It has had mixed results, but the technique is gradually improving.

Typically, the cost of astigmatism surgery in New Jersey is about $1800 per eye. This cost can vary greatly depending on the surgeon and where the procedure happens. Another factor may be whether the doctor is using traditional methods or helping to pioneer new ones. When talking with your doctor about astigmatism surgery, get all the facts so you know what you are getting and paying for.
