The Various Types of Astigmatism Surgery and Costs in Pennsylvania

Astigmatism is a refractive defect of the eye causing blurry vision and the most often cited reason that a person goes to see an ophthalmologist. Astigmatism happens due to irregular shape of the cornea or the curvature of the lens inside the eye. These defects prevent light from correctly reaching the back side of the eye, resulting in nearsightedness. Although most people have some very mild form of astigmatism, it causes no real vision problem and does not require a trip to the eye doctor for treatment. However, the more sever the astigmatism, the higher the chances are a person may begin to experience blurred vision, headaches, and eye pain.

For individuals interested in find surgery options in Pennsylvania, there are several kinds of surgery options available, including PRK, LASIK, and LASEK. During PRK (photorefractive keratectomy), the surgeon removes tissue from the outermost, as well as the inner, layer of the cornea. PRK was a precursor to LASIK surgery and is still used on patients with thin corneas. In LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis), a small flap is made on the outer layer of the cornea and then the surgeon uses a high focus laser to carefully reshape the cornea so light is once more guided into the eye and back to the retina in the right direction.

LASEK surgery is the most new of the three types of surgery discussed here and combines all the best elements of PRK and LASIK into one procedure. LASEK (laser epithelial keratomileusis) does not require a corneal flap. Instead, the eye is prepped with a special solution of 20% alcohol. Next, the surgeon uses a special blade known as a microkeratome to make an incision, followed by lifting the corner of the cornea so that a smaller blade, the trephine, can loosen the cornea. A laser is then used to reshape the defective curvature of the cornea. This allows for a faster healing time.

Lastly, AK surgery is when the surgeon makes one or two incisions in the steepest part of the cornea, allowing it to relax into a more rounded shape. LTK surgery uses non-invasive laser reshaping and usually needs to be redone at some point. The cost to a patient electing to have astigmatism surgery in Pennsylvania varies. Costs can vary and finding the surgeon and plan you want can take some research. Some may charge as little as a few hundred dollars per eye while most will charge, on average, $2,000 to $3,000 per eye. Many clinics and private offices are able to offer financing plans to make the surgery more attainable to all patients.
