Washington Astigmatism Surgery - Understanding Different Types of Astigmatism Surgery

Astigmatism is a vision problem that affects the eye's ability to focus light. This condition, although common, has nothing to do with how healthy or unhealthy the eye is. People who suffer from astigmatism have multiple points of entry rather than one single entry point for light to penetrate. If you suffer from symptoms including headaches, distorted or blurred visions, and consistent squinting, talk to an ophthalmologist as this may be a sign that you suffer from astigmatism. Ask the ophthalmologist what types of astigmatism surgery are available in Washington for you to choose from.

Some patients may find relief from their astigmatism condition with corrective lenses. However, there are several cases in which the eye continues to deteriorate or lenses simply do not work. In this case, you may need surgery to correct astigmatism. Types of astigmatism surgery in Washington include LASEK, LASIK, PRK, CK, and AK. PRK is not as widely used anymore since the introduction of LASEK and LASIK, which are more advanced forms of the PRK procedure. With PRK, the surgeon gently wipes away the thing surface layer over the cornea and reshapes the cornea using laser power to correct the vision. Although some doctors still use PRK as a method to correct vision, it is very uncommon.

LASEK and LASIK are the most preferred methods of surgery to use in order to correct astigmatism. The surgeon makes a small incision to create a flap in the thin epithelial layer that rests over the cornea. During the LASEK procedure, the incision made is smaller than the incision created during LASIK. Ophthalmologists highly recommend this procedure since the recovery time is usually only 24 to 48 hours. Both surgeries are similar other than the size of the flap created so the outcome of both is typically very successful. Additionally, the cost of the surgeries is usually the same with the exception that most insurance companies will cover LASIK but no LASEK.

Some ophthalmologists may prefer to use CK or AK as their preferred method of astigmatism surgery in Washington although both of these surgeries are relatively new compared to PRK, LASEK, and LASIK. Again, both surgeries reshape the cornea. AK uses laser power for cornea reshaping and AK uses radio frequency. CK is still considered an experimental form of astigmatism correction surgery and is therefore not as widely used as the other methods already mentioned. Schedule an appointment with an ophthalmologist in Washington to determine which procedure will work best for you.
