Glaucoma Surgery in Florida - Types and Costs of Glaucoma Surgery in the Sunshine State

Sometimes called the 'silent thief of sight,' glaucoma actually refers to a group of diseases of the eye. These are usually related to excess intraocular pressure (pressure within the eye), but not always. Loss of vision typically occurs over a long period of time, and there may not be any symptoms for a while. Glaucoma is often treated with surgery, but there are a number of types of glaucoma surgery in Florida being used. The types of surgery recommended by your doctor depend on what type of glaucoma you have. There are two main types of glaucoma: open angle and closed angle (or angle closure).

Open angle glaucoma is the most common. Experts estimate that over 4 million people have glaucoma in the United States alone, and most of these are open angle cases. Closed angle glaucoma has a more sudden onset, and it typically grows severe more quickly than open angle. Common types of glaucoma surgery in Florida hospitals and outpatient centers include: Sclerostomy, Laser Trabeculoplasty, Iridotomy and Viscocanalostomy. Less common procedures include Tube-shunt surgery, endoscopic goniotomy, laser trabecular ablation, Goniotomy, surgical cyclodialysis, drainage implant surgery, trabeculotomy, goniophotoablation, rabeculopuncture, Goniocurretage, cyclogoniotomy, ciliarotomy, Canaloplasty, cyclocryopexy, Cyclodiathermy and Cyclophotocoagulation.

All of these types of glaucoma surgeries are utilized to prevent further vision loss. There is currently no cure for glaucoma, and existing vision loss from these diseases cannot be reversed. Sclerostomy is a surgery in which the surgeon creates a channel to drain excess fluid, reducing the pressure in the eye. Laser Trabeculoplasty uses lasers to modify or clear blockages in the trabecular mesh below the iris. This allows the aqueous humor (liquid in the eye) to flow freely when it has been blocked. Iridotomy surgery creates tiny holes in the iris of the eye to release liquid and reduce pressure. It can be performed with lasers or traditional means. In a Viscocanalostomy, the surgeon makes a scleral flap that exposes Schlemm's canal, relieving intraocular pressure.

The costs of glaucoma surgery in Florida will depend on several factors, including the doctor you choose, your surgery type, and whether it is performed as outpatient surgery or in a hospital. The national average cost of outpatient glaucoma surgery is around $1,300, while inpatient glaucoma surgery costs are closer to $5,500. In the Miami area, the average cost of glaucoma surgery performed in outpatient settings is closer to $1,500 to $2,000, but inpatient costs are the same as the national average.
