Types of Glaucoma Surgery in Indiana Costs in Indiana

According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, more than 60 million people have problems with their vision due to glaucoma. Glaucoma is a rather complex eye disorder that can involve the optic nerve, excess fluid and pressure within the eye and vision loss. This is a tragic problem that cannot usually be prevented and in some cases, can be extremely difficult to treat. Surgery is the most aggressive and popular treatment, and there are several types of glaucoma surgery in Indiana. The type of surgery is dictated by the type of glaucoma the patient has. There are roughly ten different types of glaucoma.

The Glaucoma Research Foundation has stated that 2.2 million people have glaucoma, but only about half are aware of it. Also, there are more than 120,000 Americans that are blind because of glaucoma, and African Americans are at a much higher risk than Caucasians. There are an estimated total of around 60 million people with glaucoma worldwide. The typical surgery options are laser, which is the preferred method of glaucoma surgery, and conventional, which is more invasive but often works more quickly to remove pressure from the eye. However, there are several types of laser surgery, and their use will depend on the type of glaucoma.

According to the Healthcare Blue Book, outpatient laser glaucoma surgery costs $1,371, while hospitalized patients receiving laser surgery will have to pay $5,464. However, there will be price variables that are affected by location, degree of glaucoma and type of laser used during the surgery. There was no documentation available for conventional glaucoma surgery costs, as the variables were too wide. However, the costs are probably substantial, as this is a more difficult procedure and is rarely done as an outpatient procedure. The patient needing conventional surgery will have to speak with the local surgeons to obtain price information.

Glaucoma costs in Indiana, as with any type of medical procedure, will be different for each person. The clinic, the level of insurance coverage, the type of glaucoma and the type of surgery will affect the final financial outcome. Typically, the clinics that specialize in glaucoma disorders will have the best knowledge and pricing options for the clients. As this is such a serious disorder, it is far more important to get an excellent surgeon than an affordable one. Choosing a poor surgeon could lead to blindness. It is imperative to stay on top of this condition at all times.
