Types of Glaucoma Surgery and Costs in Maine

Glaucoma is a term that covers a group of conditions which can lead to irreversible damage to the optic nerve. A very common reason for glaucoma to develop is increased pressure in the eye. Known as intraocular pressure, this pressure can put strain on the optic nerve if left untreated. However, there are other forms of glaucoma that do not involve increased intraocular pressure. There are four common types of glaucoma: open-angle or chronic glaucoma, angle-closure or acute glaucoma, congenital glaucoma, or secondary glaucoma. The types of glaucoma surgery and costs in Maine often depend heavily on which form of the disease is present.

The most common form of glaucoma is open-angle glaucoma. This form of the disease has no known cause, but involves damage to the optic nerve, caused by high levels of intraocular pressure. This disease seems to have a genetic link as it happens in families quite often. The first stage of treatment is to reduce the intraocular pressure by use of special eye drops. This treatment seems to help most patients. However, in some cases, doctors may recommend surgery. A common form of surgery for this type of glaucoma is known as selective laser trabeculoplasty. This surgery helps to open up drainage holes to bring down pressure levels.

Acute, or closed-angle, glaucoma is actually an urgent condition that requires immediate attention. This type of glaucoma seems to come on suddenly. If left untreated, it can actually cause blindness within a few days. As with open-angle glaucoma, drops can help alleviate and stop an attack in most patients. However, in some cases, doctors may have to perform another type of glaucoma surgery known as an iridotomy. This involves using a laser to open a pathway in the colored part of the eye to drain excessive pressure. This can stop the attack and even prevent another attack.

Congenital glaucoma is a condition that shows up in infants and toddlers between birth and three years old. It happens due to improper development of the eye's drainage system. Surgery is almost always the preferred treatment method. The two most common surgeries are goniotomy and trabeculotomy. Secondary glaucoma is any form of glaucoma that develops due to a known cause. For example, eye injury or medications are common reasons for secondary glaucoma. Surgeries for this form of glaucoma include all the others discussed. Typically costs for glaucoma surgery in Maine depend on location. For an ambulatory surgery center, costs run about $1350. For a hospital it can run to $5700.
