The Types and Costs of Glaucoma Surgery in Pennsylvania

As with most any condition, the earliest glaucoma is detected and treatment started, the better results you may experience in slowing or stopping vision loss. If you are facing glaucoma surgery, then the condition has become serious enough that your vision is at risk. The main goal of all glaucoma treatments is to decrease the production of intraocular fluid (aqueous humor), or to increase the outflow or draining of the intraocular fluid. Treatment is based upon which type of glaucoma you have. The earliest the IOP (intraocular pressure) can be stabilized, the better your chances of stopping damage to ocular structures from occurring.

When you begin seriously considering the cost of glaucoma surgery in Pennsylvania, the price averages around the same all throughout the U.S. Most surgeries, no matter which type you are having, generally run about $3,000 per eye. However, costs can drastically vary depending on who is doing your surgery and where you are having the surgery performed. Other things to consider include hospital stays versus outpatient surgery. The difference between ambulatory glaucoma laser surgery and the same surgery done in a hospital setting can be thousands of dollars apart, in favor of the outpatient setting. Choosing what you feel most financially able to handle, is another important decision you must make.

Another big decision that must be made is the type of glaucoma surgery you need to have. Laser trabeculoplasty is done for those patients who need to have the intraocular fluid outflow in the eye increased. The surgeon makes pinpoint holes where the cornea and iris meet, at the filtration angle. Eye drops are usually continued after this type of surgery. A newer form of this particular surgery is SLT (selective laser trabeculoplasty) This surgery produces only minimal heat damage to surrounding tissue and so it is a procedure that can be performed again, if necessary. This surgery is ideal for anyone who has a hard time following an eye drop regime.

SLT runs higher at about $3,000 nationwide, but luckily, if you are having SLT, Medicare and other types of insurance may pay for some of the costs of this particular surgery. If cost is a concern make certain that wherever you choose to have your surgery there are financing options available to you to help with costs not offset by your insurance coverage. Many clinics and private offices will offer in-house financing and month payment plans to help you get the surgery you need for better vision. Again, it's important that to keep your eyesight healthy for as long as possible, you have regular eye exams and get treatment as soon as needed in case of eye problems.
