Cost of LASEK Surgery in Indiana

LASEK is a surgery that is different than the well-known LASIK. The difference lies in the area being corrected; LASEK focuses on correcting the outer shape of the eye to create normal vision. LASIK is more invasive, and corrects the inner portion of the eyeball, rather than the outer portion. However, both procedures have the same function correcting vision that is poor due to an improper eyeball shape. LASEK is primarily used for those that have a cornea that is too thin for the more invasive LASIK procedure. However, more surgeons are starting to use LASEK for their corrective surgery.

The downside of LASEK surgery is that the eyes tend to take longer to heal, and there is often more discomfort involved. During the surgery, local anesthesia is applied, and then the cornea is incised. The epithelial area is lifted out of the way, and then the inner cornea tissue is reshaped as needed. This procedure has helped many people who were not good candidates for LASIK have corrective surgery, although the healing time takes about twice as long, and the vision will not be clear for about a week. The cost of LASEK surgery in Indiana is about the same as LASIK patients can expect to pay between $2,500 and $5,000 for the entire procedure.

Depending on the patient's needs and the surgeon's skill, LASEK does have some advantages, in that the risks for cornea injury are far less. In addition, there are indications that the cornea sensation is retained far better with LASEK than with other similar procedures. Not everyone is a good candidate for LASEK, however, and it is a good idea to find out why this procedure has been recommended over the others. Those with dry eyes or cornea thinness are usually the best candidates.

Depending on the personal insurance and the need for LASEK, some insurance companies may help offset the costs. Usually, however, the costs are covered completely by the patient, which can be extremely difficult. Many surgeons will allow a payment plan to make it easier for the patient to attain the needed surgery. Typically, since this is an elective procedure, the insurance companies will not allow coverage. Patients can get a loan with a bank, use their credit card, or apply for CareCredit. It is better to get a good surgeon than a cheap surgeon, and the patient needs to carefully view the surgeon's credentials.
