Washington LASEK - Examining the Cost of LASEK in Washington

LASEK surgery, not to be confused with LASIK surgery is a procedure that is an all actuality, very similar to LASIK. In fact, the only difference between the two is that LASEK uses a much smaller incision than LASIK. Since the two procedures are so similar, the cost of LASEK in Washington is about the same as the cost of LASIK. Keep in mind that you may have to cover the cost of LASEK out of pocket. The procedure is a voluntary one, meaning you choose to have the procedure. Many insurance companies do not cover the cost of LASEK.

LASEK is often preferred over LASIK since the procedure does not require as large of an incision. Because of the smaller incision, there is actually a slight reduction in the complications involved with the procedure compared to those involved with LASIK. LASEK, otherwise known as laser epithelial keratomileusis, is a more advanced version or PRK, which is a procedure that uses a laser to reshape the surface of the eye for vision correction purposes. A local anesthetic is used during the LASEK procedure as well as a diluted solution that will help loosen the epithelium.

The entire procedure can be done as an outpatient procedure, which helps reduce the cost. Very rarely is there ever a need for in-patient cases. In-patient may be necessary if the patient has a reaction to the anesthetic or a bad reaction to the procedure itself although the chances of that occurring are slim. One thing that affects the cost of LASEK in Washington is the type of facility that performs the procedure. Larger, more advanced facilities may charge more. Another factor that may affect cost is location. Highly-populated metro areas may charge higher prices than smaller areas and facilities.

Another difference to take into consideration is the fact that recovery from LASEK is actually longer than recovery from LASIK. While the flap created during LASEK will usually heal after a day, patients may be required to wear a protective bandage for approximately four days in order to ensure the eye is fully healed. It is normal to experience irritation for the first day or two after your surgery. Normal vision should return within four to seven days although it may take longer for some patients. If you experience any ongoing problems, contact your surgeon as soon as possible to let him or her know.
