Missouri PRK Surgery

Laser eye surgeries are able to correct a personís vision using a laser. These are fairly quick surgeries mostly performed on an outpatient basis. In Missouri, most of these surgeries are in either a surgical eye center or an eye doctorís office. PRK surgery is a special type of laser eye surgery that does not use a metal blade to cut a personís eye to fix a vision problem. Instead the doctor will use a cool beam ultraviolet laser light to penetrate through the layers of the eye to the cornea, without damaging these parts of the eye. The laser manipulates the shape of the cornea to correct the vision problem.

Most people who are nearsighted or farsighted have irregular shaped corneas. This changes the refraction off the cornea so it does not filter correctly into the retina. The result is poor vision. Some people with astigmatism have an additional vision problem. All of these vision problems can be fixed with PRK surgery in most cases. Some patients, who are not good candidates for LASIK eye surgery because they have a thin cornea, are given the PRK surgery. The procedure is successful in most cases and is very minimally invasive.

The doctor will use the laser with a special microscope so they can see inside the patientís eye. The laser is directed at the cornea and the shape is manipulated, usually by cutting a portion off the top of the cornea. The epithelium layer is removed with an alcohol solution and then thrown away. The PRK surgery differs from the LASEK surgery in that this layer is not put back into the eye. The epithelium layer, which is a protectant film made of tissue is regenerated by the body. This will occur during the healing process. The entire procedure takes about 15 minutes per eye.

The average cost of PRK surgery in Missouri is about $1,200 per eye. Many surgeons who have high levels of expertise and credentials will charge a higher price. The extent of correction that a patient needs will be a factor in the price of the surgery. This is an elective surgery in most cases, so insurance companies typically do not cover the cost. Most eye doctors have financial payment plans that can be offered so the patient can make monthly payments over a period of time that is agreed upon between the patient and the doctor. This can make the financial burden much less upfront.
