Pennsylvania PRK Surgery

When a person decides to get corrective laser eye surgery they will typically see an eye doctor for an examination. There are many types of laser eye surgeries. One in particular has a high success rate. This is the PRK surgery, the photorefractive keratectomy. This is a highly accurate laser surgery that has a very high success rate in patients who have vision problems such as nearsightedness or farsightedness with or without astigmatism. The surgery takes about 15 minutes to perform on each eye. Most doctors recommend having one eye done at a time due to the healing process.

The PRK surgery is widely performed in Pennsylvania. Many surgeries are either performed at a surgical eye center or an eye doctorís office. The average cost for the PRK surgery in the state is $1,500 per eye. This cost can be more if there is extensive vision correction needed. Some highly esteemed eye surgeons that have very good credentials and many years of experience may charge much more than other eye surgeons. Since this is considered to be an elective surgery, most insurance companies do not pay for this under a patientís policy. There are many financial payment plans that one can use to pay monthly payments in lieu of the entire payment upfront.

The surgery will be performed in most cases as an outpatient procedure. The patient will need to have a driver to take them home afterwards. When the patient arrives to the eye doctorís or surgical center, the doctor or assistant will drop medicine in the patientís eye to numb the area so they will not feel pain. This can take about ten minutes. Once the eye is number the epithelium is removed with a solution made of alcohol. The laser is directed at the cornea and this area is reshaped.

The doctor will place a bandage in the form of a clear contact lens on the eye to protect the cornea since the epithelium is removed. This layer grows back in about three days. During the follow up visit with the doctor, he will remove the bandage. This is also a time when they typically discuss how the healing process is coming along and what the prognosis for vision correction is. There will be some mild discomfort after the surgery and it can take between one to three months to completely heal. Complete vision assessment can be made after one year.
