Utah PRK Surgery

In the state of Utah there are quite a few eye doctors who perform laser eye surgery on patients that need vision correction. Many people are tired of hassling with contact lenses or wearing eye glasses in order to see. PRK surgery is a type of laser surgery. It is photorefractive keratectomy surgery that uses a low beam laser light that is ultraviolet to correct the vision. This is done by correcting the shape of the cornea so that light will refract into the retina correctly. Many people who have vision problems such as nearsightedness or farsightedness have a misshaped cornea.

The eye doctor will examine the patient to determine if they are a good candidate for PRK surgery. Many patients who are not good candidate for LASIK surgery can have PRK surgery. They may have conditions such as thin corneas or dry eyes that prevent them from having LASIK. The laser in the PRK surgery is very gentle and does not disturb the layers beneath the cornea when it is used to shape this part of the eye. This is a highly accurate laser that is very successful in improving vision.

During the surgery the doctor will use numbing eye drops so the patient feels no pain. The eyes are propped open with a special tool. The doctor will remove the epithelium layer of the eye, which is a protect layer. This is removed using a solution of alcohol. Once this is removed, the doctor will point the laser at the cornea and being to reshape the eye. The entire surgery only takes about 15 minutes, but the laser portion is one only to two minutes. The doctor will place a special clear contact lens over the cornea to act as a bandage. This is removed during a follow up visit in about three days.

The average cost of PRK surgery in Utah is about $1,600 per eye. This can vary according to other factors such as how extensive the vision loss is and what type of surgeon will be performing the surgery. Certain high end surgical centers with highly experienced doctors will usually charge more than a small eye doctor with a private practice. One of the other variables that can affect the price is the location of the surgery. Some larger cities will cost more than smaller cities depending on the economic condition of the city. The result from this surgery can lead to vision correction for a high percentage of patients.
