Laser Assisted In situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) is a surgery that can be used for correcting farsightedness or hyperopia. The procedure is safe and painless, and the patient is not required to stay in the hospital. With LASIK, people suffering from farsightedness can be free from contact lenses and eyeglasses. Let’s take a look at the procedure of correcting hyperopia with LASIK in more detail.
What is Hyperopia?
Hyperopia is the condition whereby the eyeball is either too short or the lens is not round in shape, reducing focus on nearby objects. In extreme conditions, the person may not be able to see objects at any distance. People with hyperopia can suffer blurred vision, binocular dysfunction, accommodative dysfunction, and other related conditions. Generally, hyperopia is considered a hereditary condition, but it can also happen to people as a result of an eye injury. The vision problem is caused by the deformity in the eyeball, which causes defects in vision as the light rays are not focused on the retina, but behind the retina instead. Hyperopia patients may suffer from headache, difficulty in focusing, and blurred vision.

A person born with hyperopia may find it difficult to see images or merge images. A child suffering from hyperopia may not see an object in detail. In this way, the child may develop problems in catching a ball and fall behind in the area of academics. If left untreated, the child who doesn’t see things clearly may develop amblyopia or the lazy eye condition, which means the child’s brain loses the capability to view specification of an object. The condition can lead to reduced depth perception and the child will have difficulty in analyzing hidden images in 3D images. Untreated hyperopia can cause headaches and blurred vision in adults.
What Lasik Surgery Is and How It Can Be Used To Correct Hyperopia?
LASIK surgery is the ideal treatment for correcting hyperopia. To treat hyperopia, a thick flap is made on the cornea and laser rays are applied to the central corneal tissues by lifting the flap. The laser rays help in changing the profile of cornea and remove tissues from cornea to improve vision. About 80% of the people suffering from hyperopia have vision less than 6 dioptre. LASIK is considered to be a safe surgery in the case where the patient has stable hyperopia and corneal thickness is adequate. LASIK requires the patient to be more than 16 years, and the patient should not suffer from uncontrolled diabetes. Even pregnant women are not eligible for the surgery.
The LASIK eye surgery takes not more than a few minutes. Once the vision is corrected successfully, the patient can see clearly the very next day. The patient may not suffer pain during and after the surgery, although, minor itching and scratchiness may be felt. Eye drops and antibiotics are provided to reduce pain and inflammations in the eye. The patient may need to go to the doctor for regular checkup after the laser eye surgery.
